Alpena Grounds Services Utilizes On-the-Job Training for Hard To Fill Position
Alpena Grounds Services, Inc., has the very important job of maintaining the Alpena County Regional Airport, but they’ve struggled in the past with finding skilled employees to fill their open Maintenance Technician positions. Ideal candidates must be skilled in operating equipment, such as snow plows and loaders, as well as be able to conduct oil changes and minor repairs to equipment.
Recently, Alpena Grounds Services came to Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium for help in finding a suitable candidate for an open Maintenance Technician position. Working with Alpena Michigan Works! Business Services Professional, Jessica Hellenberg, Alpena Grounds Services not only received help with their job posting and resume collection, but also was able to secure On-the-Job Training (OJT) reimbursement. The OJT allowed them to hire someone with less experience than preferred and then train that new hire on exactly what was needed of them.
Thanks to the OJT, Alpena Grounds Services now has a fully trained employee who is prepared to handle the necessary airport maintenance. Daniel Sharp, the newly trained employee, has received numerous marks of “excellent” on each time card and has proven, thus far, to be an excellent addition to their company.
